25 Days of Giving Thanks – Day 17 – Music

Welcome to Day 17 of our Giving Thanks project. Yesterday we talked about the gift of literacy. Being able to read and write is a basic skill for most of us, yet there are so many Americans who struggle to read a menu or fill out a job application. Let’s not take this skillset for granted. It is truly life-changing. If you missed that post, you can find it here: Reading.

Let’s talk about something else that is a huge part of our life … music. How many of us wake to music on our alarms? Sing in the shower? Listen to music in the car? Workout to fast-paced music to keep our energy up? Fall asleep to our favorite songs?

We are surrounded by music from the time we are babies. We are soothed to sleep by the calming sounds of lullabies. We sing songs in pre-school. We sing songs in church. We sing songs at camp. I still remember the songs that I learned in music class in 5th and 6th grade… “Grandma’s Featherbed” and “Orion is Arising.”

We associate music with some of the biggest events in our life. Do you remember your senior prom song? Mine was “Heaven” by Bryan Adams. I remember riding around with my friends, listening to Madonna, Heart, Bruce Springsteen, and Michael Jackson. Every time I hear those songs, I am back in high school.

Music is the universal language of mankind.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Music is a huge part of our life. It is part of our childhood, our traditions, our celebrations, our milestones. Let’s take a moment to reflect on how music impacts us. Music can cheer us up, educate us, motivate us, distract us, and transport us back in time. Perhaps we take it for granted sometimes? Yes, indeed we have much to be thankful for…

Until next time, keep listening for the goodness around you.

With gratitude,

Denise 🙂
