Did you know that the average adult body is made up of approximately 60% water? Therefore, itβs no big secret that most of us could benefit from drinking more water to maintain optimal health. Even so, there are plenty of people who avoid drinking plain old water. I have a confession, I was raised on soda. Big Ben soda was manufactured just 8 miles from our house. Decades before Amazon or Grub Hub, we were on the weekly delivery route of the Catawissa Bottling Company. We never drank water, unless it was mixed with powdered Kool-Aid π But that was the 70s and the 80s, and things were different back then. It’s 2020 so let’s talk about adding more water into our lives!
I am much more intentional about getting more water into my body these days. If you need a little help in this area, here are 7 super-easy (and sneaky) tips to add more water into your day:
- Keep a bottle of water on your bedside table. I prefer to drink “room temperature” bottled water. (I can imagine that some of you are cringing at the thought of warm water). I always have a bottle of water on my bedside table and will drink before bed and again when I wake up. I keep my daily medication here so itβs easy to drink water with my pills.
2. When eating out, always order water with your meal. This strategy will not only keep the calories down, but it will also help keep your bill down. A fountain soda, ice tea or other non-alcoholic beverage can easily run you $2-$4 dollars in a restaurant. Multiply that by a family of 5 and you just saved $10 – $20 (BAM!).
3. If you choose to drink something other than water, add ice cubes. As the ice melts, you are adding water to your body. Plus, they make so many cool ice cube trays these days.
I am in love with this set of 3 trays which include balls, blocks, and DIAMONDS. Right now they are only $16.99 on Amazon. You can pick them up here: https://amzn.to/30IUqrY
4. Alternate water with other beverages. I love coffee but I will drink a glass of water before I have a second cup of coffee. This is also a great tip when you’re drinking alcohol. It helps to keep you hydrated which may reduce hangovers when you’re enjoying some celebration.
5. Add natural flavor to your water. This is such an easy trick to enhance plain water. There are countless varieties of bottled flavored water on the market (both sparkling and non-sparkling) but it is so easy to add natural flavor to your water at home. Just drop a slice of fruit, a sprig of mint, or sliced cucumbers into your water for a refreshing and healthy flavor twist. I personally enjoy lime more than lemon and you don’t have to fish any seeds out of your glass.
If you are slicing fruit, you might as well make a pitcher of flavored water. This 2 Qt Glass Water Pitcher is beautiful and perfect for flavor-infusing Hot/Cold Water or tea. It is currently less than $20.00 on Amazon – Pick it up here: https://amzn.to/33GKtNO
6. Pre-measure your daily water intake. This is a great way to ensure you meet your daily water goal. I try to drink 100 oz. of water each day. Each day, I pre-fill three 33oz plastic water bottles. I do this for a couple of reasons. I prefer to drink alkaline water and I make my own alkaline water with a huge Brita pitcher and an alkaline filter. It is easy to grab a bottle and take it with me. I re-use these same bottles over and over which decreases the amount of plastic that I consume. I’ll talk more about alkaline water in another post.
7. Invest in a beautiful, high-quality, stainless steel water bottle and bring it with you everywhere. I have several stainless water bottles in varying sizes. These are wonderful for keeping your water cold for extended periods of time. I especially like these for long road trips, beach days, and traveling on planes (traveling….what’s that?). You can find them in any department store and most grocery stores now. I’ve had my Mira bottle for 3 years, it’s been all over the country with me and it still looks brand new. You can pick one up on Amazon – they came in many shapes, sizes, colors, and designs.
Those are my 7 easy tips for adding more water into your day. If you have any other tips or tricks, please feel free to share them below. Until next time, keep looking for the goodness in your world.
With gratitude,
Denise π

Hello – Thanks so much for the positive feedback and for sharing my website. I appreciate it π Denise
Love this! I dont drink as much water as I want every day. This had some great ideas.
Tess
Thanks Tess – Glad it was helpful. Be well! Denise
Yes, I have to track my water intake in water bottles to get to the goal of half my body weight in ounces! It’s so much easier when you track it because I would never get there on my own. Love the tips for more fun ways to add them!
Thank you, Kristin – Great job on drinking half of your bodyweight in ounces! It seems so daunting, but more manageable when you measure and spread it out over the day. Be well and stay safe π
These are really good tips! I really need help getting my daily water intake up. I think I am going to try pre-measuring my water. Also, I have those round ice cube trays! They’re so fun.
Hi Ellie – thanks for the kind words! I have several “fun” shapes for ice cubes also. I just recently saw something on Pinterest where they froze different fruit into the round trays for a colorful treat. I might try that at Thanksgiving just to impress my family π Hope your week is going well! Denise
I love the cute ice cubes. Great ideas. I have such a hard time drinking the amount of water I’m supposed to drink.
Hi Linda – Thanks so much. When I don’t have my three 33oz water bottles sitting out, right in front of me…I don’t hit my daily goal. For me – it is “out of sight, out of mind”. My husband does not like water either, but I figure that every little bit helps – even if he only drinks water once or twice a day. I’m working on him! Have a great day. Hope these tips help. Denise
I love the tips in here! I definitely drink more water when I get a new water bottle but really struggle with getting enough each day! I’ve now made it a goal of mine to drink one full water bottle of water in the car on my drive to work as well so I have kick started the day!
Thanks for the reminder to drink water! You give a lot of options to refresh our palate.
Thanks Beth – glad you found this helpful! Be well – Denise
Great tips. I made some notes!
Thanks Jill – So glad you found this helpful:-). Denise
Great tips! I can always use tips for adding more water to my day!
Thanks so much, Melissa – I still struggle to meet this daily goal. We gotta help each other out, right? Be well :-). Denise
Good stuff! The first and sixth one I have been doing since my teen years. Did the fourth one when I was working grave shift at a convenience store when I was in college: 20oz cup of soda/sweet tea/whatever, 32 oz cup of water.
As a macho-ish dude who lifts weights and is regularly active, a gallon of water isn’t enough. I usually go for two gallons, or eight quarts.
I mention this in the latest post in my blog too, as I have recently recovered from COVID19. I mention and emphasize hydration in my “survival guide” for it. Hydration is very, very, very important if you happen to contract COVID19. It minimized my symptoms quite a bit.
Cheers!
I am so slacking on drinking water! These are great ways to sneak in more H2O without having to forcing myself to down a whole glass when I remember to do so. Thanks!
Great tips. I should totally drink more water. In the past, I found buying a bottle that had my goal for the day on it and carrying it around with me helped me drink more, too. Like you, I prefer room temp water, though.
Great reminders. I used to premeasure my water intake for the day and was much better. Not so lately – and its been hard. Appreciate the push. Its so good for you.
