Hello Friends and Happy New Year!
It’s January 2nd and at my house, that means that we start putting away the Christmas decorations. As I was taking down our Christmas card display, I remembered a tip I heard on Good Morning America this past week: instead of tossing your Christmas cards into the trash, turn them into Christmas gift tags. This simple DIY project took just 15 minutes to convert this year’s cards into next year’s gift tags, and it felt really good to recycle them.
I chose the cards with the images that would make the prettiest tags. Remember to check both sides to make sure there is no writing on the back.
I used my handy dandy Letion Paper Cutter to make quick work of cutting the cards into smaller sizes but you can use scissors too. I prefer a rounded corner since it looks more finished. For that, I used my Envelope Punch Board by We R Memory Keepers. In addition to making custom envelopes, it has a built-in punch that rounds corners.
I used a hole punch and added some rustic string to half of them so they can hang from gifts. I picked up both of those items at the Dollar Store. I left the “glittery” ones plain since they were so pretty. I plan to use double-sided tape to attach those to gifts. And now they are ready for names next Christmas!
I hope you try this super-easy DIY project. If so, let me know if you have any fun tips to share.
Until next time, keep looking for the goodness around you.
With gratitude-
Denise 🙂
Beautiful will definitely try this next year!
Thank you Connie. I hope you’re doing well. Denise
I love recycling my cards to use as gift tags. Yet, your rounded corners make yours look so much more polished than mine! Putting that tool on my shopping list!!
Thank you Lana. I love that tool. I’ve only made a few custom envelopes with it, but I use the corner punch on a weekly basis! Best of luck with your project :-). Denise
This is such a great idea! I love eco friendly tips like this 🙂
Thanks so much Kathleen. I’m finding more joy in recycling or upcycling lately. Every little bit helps, right? Hope your day is amazing! Denise
I love this idea! I think I’ll also outline in gold or silver with a paint pen. Thank you!
HI Holly – Great idea to add gold or silver edging. I also make watercolor bookmarks and I love to add gold and silver to those. It’s the little details that make all the difference 🙂 Be well – Denise
My mother used to do this as well and I totally forgot about it! Such a cool idea. I will have to try that with my cards!
Thank you Stephanie – Good for your Mom! I wish I had started doing this long ago. I’m trying to do a better job of creating less garbage on our planet. I think every little bit helps :-). Be well! Denise
What a great idea!
Thanks Julianna 🙂
Love this idea. Thanks so much. I have all the needed equipment too!
Thanks so much Sandra. Yes, it’s an easy project that requires just some basic tools. Best of luck – Denise 🙂
What a great idea! I always just toss my cards!
Hi Erin – I have always tossed my cards too. I guess I had a little extra time and inspiration this year. Definitely a good project to do with kids, if you have them :-). Be well! Denise
Lovely idea. I upcycle my cards into decor (https://artfulpursuits.com/a-meaningful-way-to-recycle-your-holiday-cards/), but I throw away a portion of them. I can now use that portion, too.
Hi Boomer –
WOW! Thanks so much for attaching your link. Your Christmas card collage is amazing – I love that you are keeping a little piece from each…what a great way to save those memories and decorate for Christmas too. Your art is very inspiring! Hope your day is fantastic – Denise
Great idea! I’m always looking for ways to upcycle different materials and this is quick and easy.
HI Elise – This was a really quick project and I’m excited to use these tags next year. I have to give credit to Good Morning America for the idea, I wish I had thought of it! Hope your day is going well 🙂 Denise
This is such a great idea and so easy. I received a lot fewer Christmas cards this year. Maybe I’ll try it next year.
Hi Michelle – We also received fewer cards this year and many of them were photo cards (which I love to get). I guess social media is replacing Christmas cards, which makes me sad. I’ve already bought mine for next year though (very grateful for after Christmas sales) 🙂 Be well – Denise
